About Nyi K’omi
Kennetha Greenwood
Nyi K’omi, Kennetha Greenwood, is an award-winning artist influenced by the designs of her Otoe-Missouria people. She was encouraged at a young age by working with her grandmother and mother on their ribbon work patterns as they sewed traditional clothing. Being a woodlands tribe, the Otoe-Missouria were surrounded by the beauty reflected in the flowers and plants. They showed their respect for the blessings and provisions in their environment by using these floral and abstract geometric designs in their creations, which she still honors in her work today.
Nyi K’omi is her Otoe-Missouria name given to her by her great-grandmother meaning Roaring Water. Nyi is water and K’o is the sound the water makes when it hits the rocks, making a roaring sound. The "mi" denotes it’s female. When given her name, her great-grandmother told her she was like water that makes it’s own path.
